The plains: fertile, extensive and abandoned

Sofos de Mileto

It is a land walked or backtracked, on a galloping or trodden horse, or in powerful jeeps, vans and airplanes, which travel endless and open routes in these immense savannahs, full of history, hopes and problems. Chroniclers, poets, novelists, reporters have described these prints in colorful form, with their lyrical, geographical and human reality of notorious contrasts and successes. From Humboldt and Codazzi to Gallegos, who painted us the fabulous scenes of “Doña Barbara” and “Cantaclaro”, passing by Armas Chitty unraveling the story of the apureños plains.

The plain is mysterious; it attracts and conjures. It has a particular capacity to surround us in its great and dramatic environment. In it, the spirit of adventure awakens. Everything there is great, from its undeveloped potential, to the violence of its two perfectly defined seasons that delineate the anguish of hope.

What is the plain like and what is it looking for

When we look on the map at the plains, including the deltaic plain, we are struck by two images. Another of technological content, which looks like an aerodynamic structure of the fuselage of an airplane dropped between mountains and coast, in a strange landing. In that extension it is no longer the horse that dominates all the directions and opens paths in the infinite pampa. Today, it shares that destination with the plane, in far-away herds, the vehicle, in its veins that cross it with solitary roads, and the curiara and the boat, in its navigable rivers. Then, the fish is the reinvindication of the great rivers that make up their intricate circulatory system. Humboldt saw it as a tempting “sea of grasses”. Codazzi found it “a vast area of pastures”.  It is an infinity loaded of possibilities and mirages, where in its majestic and mind-blowing territory; man is the measure of his own courage, traveling this land of contrasts, changing and immutable at the same time, where nature becomes present between water, fire and distance. Its topography is rugged. It is found the airy vegetation of its palm trees, or the bright mirror of its esteros, or the scattered and resonant spot of the chaparrales. The plain is varied within its own surroundings. Land, rivers, vegetation, people, integrate a reality of changing traits. Suddenly, there are some new herds, with comfortable homes, which only accommodate their owner.

With the cattle and its leathers, exposed to the sun, the weather and the serene, with moorings and long fences, the plain is born at the foot of the Andean mountain range and coast to the estuarine jungles of Monagas. This large geographic complex is divided into three large areas commonly known: Western Plains, made up by the states Apure, Barinas and Portuguesa, and are the most commonly identified with Venezuelan plains. Central Plains, a plain region where the states of Guárico and Cojedes are located in the center of the country. Eastern Plains, made up, for the biggest part, of the states Anzoátegui, Monagas and Delta Amacuro. However, there is another distribution, marked by the culture of the same village: High and low Plains, depending on the posibble flood zones or not. Logically the High Plains do not suffer the rigors of the waters, while the Netherlands are at their mercy and change their physiognomy during the prolonged plain winter. The Plains are still going through the exact course to be definitively incorporated to the dynamics of the country. However, like the rest of Venezuela, they have been hit hard all over their length by a red plague that aims to wipe out all manifestation of production.

Summer, winter, and the living of the plainsman

The life in the plains is ruled by winter and summer. Between these two climatic poles, the brave existence of the plainsman is going on. Man and landscape change.  There are rivers that disappear during the drought, and then the plain becomes tense and brittle. They are rivers that go and return in the other season. Soils vary from sector to sector. The plants, the pastures and the animals move. This is how from November to May lasts the summer and from May to October falls the rainy season. The rainy season affects the plain life, affecting the non-flood zone, the highest and driest, because the water exerts a healthy action on the vegetation, the landscape is full of life and the fullness of the green and fruitful transcends the wildlife and man. In the inundable portion, as it is lower, it becomes more humid. There is joy in the plainsman. With the first rains in this area, the fields produce a rapid germination of the seeds of the annual plants. As we see, customs, airs, skies, and the life of the plainsman modify their physiognomy and attitude. Each season determines the inhabitants of these lands. The temperature is always ardorous, but it is softened by trade winds that blow constantly with varied intensity, sometimes so strong, that it brings down trees and roofs of homes. Despite all this, the typical plainsman, a survivor of the heroic as it is qualified by Jose Ramón Medina, still retains distinctive features. The one of the plain earth is given to the cordiality, open, without malice. The one of the high ground is introverted, wary, and distrustful, of little talk.

Fertile and productive zone

The Plain is of low population density, but is a large reservoir of livestock and agriculture. There, livestock farming has prevailed, but there has also been a considerable agricultural potential. Apure was the livestock entity by excellence. Then followed by Guárico. Today there is an important cattle station in the south of Lake Maracaibo and in areas of Barinas. However, Apure, Portuguesa, Guárico, Monagas and Anzoátegui took the baton, in it´s moment, of the agricultural production. Apure has generated cocoa. In Portuguesa with bold and modern technological investment, large volumes of rice, maize, sesame, tobacco and cotton were harvested. Barinas does not stay behind with very generous lands. In Monagas and Anzoátegui, the crops of peanuts, cassava and sorghum were also revealed.

A rich wildlife accompanies the plant life. The araguato and other apes, the funny squirrel, the chiguire and the lapa, the tigrillo and the cougar, bachiros and deer are some mammals. Birds of beautiful plumages like the Gaban, others of beautiful singing, are examples of multiple species. However, petroleum appeared in large areas of the plain extension. Populations were revitalized beside black gold, partly abandoned at first by the depletion of their reserves or the productive decline. The Orinoco Petroleum Strip modified the landscape, that before the energy activity, it was a vast herbaceous extension of scarce population and extensive cattle raising. Petroleum also radically transformed the plain landscape in all its length and depth, expanding the routes of link between cities and towns, tracing new technological paths and initially seeking to turn the plain into a large barn of Venezuela. Some level of development reached Maturin, El Tigre, Barinas, San Fernando, Calabozo, Valle de la Pascua, Acarigua, Araure, San Juan de los Morros, San Carlos, El Sombrero, Altagracia de Orituco and Guanare, to name a few cities, with extensive network of roads between them, but not so flat inside.

The red plague that ended with the plains hopes

To all this potentiality, this wealth, this abundance of land, of crystal clear and flowing rivers, of pastures, of agricultural production, came a destructive, devastating, thief and dangerous plague. It is known in the plain that with the early downs, the first pools form where insects that fustigate the life of the plains proliferate, becoming this unbearable plague. However, a more devastating plague has eaten or dried the hopes of this fertile and thriving plain. It is the red plague of a regime that has turned exuberance into misery. With the petroleum strip and illegal mining, they allowed external companies of the most diverse nationalities to penetrate, explore and exploit these lands, annihilating vegetation, polluting rivers and turning the green to the reddish. They began by deceiving the naive plainsman with the “exprópiese”, leaving in ruins the burials and herds that would supposedly be richer with the direct handling of the town. Pure lies. Military, drug traffickers, guerrillas and paramilitaries, together with the recent emergence of terrorist groups, took over this vast extent, committing robbery, theft, abigeate, kidnapping, homicide and all kinds of misdeeds, to take possession of what is of the entire Venezuelan people. Sowing petroleum in fertile field became into annihilation of the plains with crime rising everywhere. In the plain the breath and the word spontaneous, round and radiant, no longer finds its echo in the distance.
